Bariatric Care in Indigenous Populations

Dr. Krista Hardy, MSc., MD, FRCSC, FACS

Associate Professor, University of Manitoba 
St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba 

Dr. Hardy completed her Doctor of Medicine (2002) at the University of Toronto and her General Surgery Residency (2008) at the University of Manitoba followed by a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Toronto (2010). Her research training included a Master of Science in Surgery degree at the University of Manitoba during surgical residency. She is a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as the American College of Surgeons. 

Dr. Hardy is an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba with a clinical practice of Minimally Invasive Surgery at St. Boniface General Hospital and Victoria General Hospital. She currently serves as Graduate Chair for the Department of Surgery. Dr. Hardy is also the research lead at the Centre for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. She actively supervises undergraduate students, medical students, surgical residents, surgical fellows and master’s students in their research activities.

Her research platform focuses on perioperative outcomes and optimization of care for bariatric surgery, outcomes of acute care surgery and surgical education. She has developed research relationships with Indigenous partners to improve the care of Indigenous bariatric surgery patients. Her research is supported by institutional grants as well as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
